Fully Funded PhD Studentship in One Health & Public Health History in West Africa (University College Dublin) – 2026
The School of History, College of Arts and Humanities, University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland is inviting applications for a generously funded PhD studentship specialising in One Health and Public Health History in West Africa (c.1850–2000).
This doctoral studentship focuses on historical research into neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Anglophone West Africa. Proposed research may address diseases such as schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, and human African trypanosomiasis, with opportunities for comparative approaches across West African countries.
The award is open to both EU and non-EU applicants and is tenable for up to four years, subject to satisfactory progress. Successful candidates will receive a full tuition fee waiver, an annual PhD stipend, and additional funding to support research activities and archival work.
The programme offers access to a vibrant and interdisciplinary research environment, with strong links to UCD research centres and international partners. The successful candidate is expected to commence the PhD programme in September 2026.
Applicants are required to submit a personal statement and CV, a writing sample, two academic references, and a research proposal of 1,000–1,500 words plus indicative bibliography.
