Research Fellow (Population Health) — London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM)

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) invites applications for a Research Fellow position within the Population Studies Group, Department of Population Health, Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team providing technical support to the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR). The role focuses on evaluating the population-level impact of large-scale azithromycin provision on child mortality in Nigeria. The position requires strong quantitative or data science skills and practical experience in survey or population-based data collection, particularly in settings with weak civil registration and vital statistics systems.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position based in London, with regular travel to Nigeria for collaboration and field engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct high-quality research and contribute to peer-reviewed publications

  • Support population-level data collection and quality monitoring

  • Analyze demographic and health datasets, including child mortality estimation

  • Provide technical support to NIMR research activities

  • Contribute to teaching, supervision, and academic citizenship activities

  • Participate in professional development and institutional responsibilities

Essential Requirements:

  • Postgraduate degree (preferably a PhD) in Demography, Epidemiology, Data Science, or a related field

  • Experience with demographic or health data collection and management

  • Strong skills in statistical analysis and data management tools

  • Evidence of academic writing and research outputs

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

  • Willingness to travel to Nigeria for research collaboration

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience with large survey datasets and demographic estimation

  • Prior work experience in Nigeria or similar settings

  • Experience contributing to research grant applications

  • Teaching or supervision experience

Salary & Contract:

  • Grade 6 position

  • Salary range: £45,728 – £51,872 per annum (inclusive of London weighting)

  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

  • Fixed term until 31 December 2026, with possibility of extension subject to funding
