About the Fellowship

Applications are invited for five CREATE PhD Programme Fellowships, a doctoral training initiative in global health designed for high-calibre health professionals who wish to pursue a PhD as a first step towards a clinical academic career.

Funded by Wellcome, CREATE is a consortium of five UK universities working with six partner research institutions across Africa and Asia to develop the next generation of clinical academic researchers.

The participating UK universities are:

• London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM)

• Brighton and Sussex Medical School, University of Sussex

• University of Sheffield

• University of Bristol

• University of Southampton

Partner institutions include the University of Ghana, University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, MRC The Gambia, MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit, Aga Khan University in Pakistan, and the Biomedical Research and Training Institute in Zimbabwe.

Application Process

The application involves two stages:

Stage 1: Initial Application
Applicants will complete an online application form demonstrating their suitability for the CREATE PhD Programme, including their motivation for doctoral research, proposed PhD research vision, and career aspirations.

Approximately 15–20 applicants will be selected to proceed to Stage 2.

Stage 2: Full PhD Proposal
Shortlisted applicants will develop a competitive PhD research proposal, prepare a detailed budget, and identify suitable supervisors in accordance with the programme's supervision requirements.

Up to five candidates will be selected for funding following external peer review and interviews in May 2027.

Successful candidates must take up their fellowship within 12 months of the award.
